Kerning within families

Will letters kern from 2 different fonts if they have the same family name, for example, regular and bold? Although they are different font files, they seem to kern, is this right? Thanks.
Sue

As far as I can tell, this does not happen. Bold or italics text will kern, but of you mix Bold and regular or r_egular_ and italic text there will be no kerning between letter pairs of different typestyles.

Bhikkhu Pesala is right. Because kerning data is stored in a font file it shouldn’t be shared with other fonts even if they belong to the same font family. Word 2000 won’t kern characters from different fonts. I assume other word processors with kerning support won’t allow this either.

Will this work if you import the same kerning pairs for both fonts? It would seem that if A is set to kern with v, for example, in both fonts, then they would kern, but is this not the case?

No. It doesn’t work in my tests.
