Make Empty

Is there a difference between using [Edit]->[Make Empty] and selecting the glyph and pressing [Delete]?

Mike

Yes. Selecting the glyph (in the glyph overview) and pressing delete would delete the glyph from the font entirely and remove its mappings, make empty merely deletes the contours it contains.

If you select the contours in the glyph edit window and press delete, that doesn’t affect the side-bearings, but if you use “Make empty” it does, whether you do that from the glyph edit window or from the glyph overview.

Bhikkhu, Thanks very helpful.
I like to have my left side bearing at x=0 in all cases. I noticed that after using Make Empty, the left side bearing moved to x = -100. Why is that?

Does this mean that there is no way of copying a multiple selection of glyphs from one
font A to another font B while maintaining the positions of the sidebearings. Ideally the sidebearings
in A would be copied but retaining the sidebearings in font B would also be better than nothing.

This is a serious product defect as having to reset the sidebearings manually for say twenty or more glyphs is a major chore.
Mike

Confirmed. We will have this fixed with the next upcoming release.

The default is to copy the glyph metrics, which includes the side-bearing and advance width. By using “Paste Special” it is possible to copy the glyph contours from Font A, but retain the advance widths in font B. Side-bearings will change, but advance widths won’t if glyph metrics are not copied.
