Meaning of "version"?

Can you tell me what is the meaning of “version” under “Contents and Layout” on the “Ranges” tab of the “Font Settings” dialogue?

I think it is not the version of the font. Is it the version of truetype? or of unicode? or of what?

Is the value stored in one of the truetype tables?

I have found that certain fonts do not appear on the font menu of Word 2002 if this “version” is 0, but they are fine if it is changed to 1.

Edit: From further reading, I guess it is the version of the OS/2 table in the truetype font. Right???

This version is related to a specific font table. A higher number indicates a more recent version of the specifications, and more settings can be set.

This response begs the question of what are the implications of using the highest value (3) in all fonts?

We may have to edit the Unicode and Code Page Character Ranges, but will we see any other impact of “automatically” updating this Version field?

The Help section was clear in identifying the fields and their settings.
