OK now i’ve sorted the corners business (I think…), can anyone tell me a way of getting the diagonals the same thickness as vertical/horizontals (200 units)

One way to accomplish this is by creating two horizontal guidelines and then rotate them with the same angle. Now snap your diagonal lines to these guidelines. Note: only points can snap to diagonal guidelines.

One can also use the measuring tool.
Another efficient method is to copy contours from one glyph to another, rather than drawing them again, and use composites wherever possible. I have used composites on … and on % and ‰ in some fonts.
