No selection after deleting points

If I select a single point or several consecutive points and delete them, then no points are selected.

I would expect that the next point on the contour would become selected. i.e. if I selected points 28-36 and deleted them, the new point 28 (what was point 37 before the deletion) would be the selected point.

Is this intentional, or an oversight? I can see a problem if several non-consecutive points were deleted, but again, one could select the 1st point after the last deleted point (according to its index).

Using the Q and W keys you can cycle through the nodes very quickly to delete a few unwanted nodes.

If your imported images have way too many nodes that need deleting to smooth out the curve, look at other import options or use a higher resolution image to make a smoother curve with less nodes.

If you want to change the contour selected with Q and W, send the current contour 0 to the back or bring the one you want to edit to the front. In a typical letter B, there will be three countours, one black clockwise contour, and two white anti-clockwise contour.

Hi Myrna,

This is intentional and as far as I know it is common behavior for such an operation. For example when you delete files from a folder through Windows explorer, it won’t automatically select a file near the selected files.

I hope Bhikkhu Pesala’s suggestions help you with your tasks.

I assume you mean Q and W rather than Q and A, no?

I have been using these keys to “walk” the curve. But since the Help and Manual talk about using Q and W to select the previous or next point, I assumed that you had to have a point selected to use them – how else would FC “know” which is the previous or next point? And, after deleting the selected point, there is no visible selection. That was my point!

But after reading your message, I tried it. The result surprised me. I selected the letter Q. Contour 1 has 30 points (0-29). I selected contour 1, point 25, and pressed Del. Then I pressed Q. This selected contour 0, point 0!!! I expected Contour 1, point 24.

After that pressing Del, then Q selected the point I expected it to. I don’t know what is going on with the first press of Q, do you? This is repeatable for me.

When you press Q while no points are selected, FontCreator will select the first point from the first contour (contour 0, point 0).

Yes, that’s what I discovered. I’ll have to try W and see if it does the same thing.

It should as that is how it is designed.
