Hi everybody,
I’m not very familiar with editing fonts. Can anybody tell me how to create an outlined font, especially based on Kabel Ult Bt true type font?
Many thanks for your help,
Thomas.

If you look at a letter like O in a standard font, you will see that it is made of two oval contours. The outside one is clockwise, and the inside one is anticlockwise. Try selecting it, right-click, and reverse the direction to see it change to black.
An outline font must be created like this. To make an Outline you need two contours. You can use the Transformation toolbar from the View menu to resize contours by a fixed % but you may still need to do some editing to get the Outline exactly even all the way around.
• Select the contour
• Copy it to the clipboard
• Paste it back in the same place
• Reduce it in size it with the Transform Toolbar
• Change the direction of the smaller inisde contour
Hello Thomas,
Are you aware that some applications e.g. Microsoft Word 2000 is able to do this with any font? Format/Font and put a tick in the box with the legend ‘Outline’. This can be done before starting the document or by selecting text in an existing passage and then changing the font style.
So, if you have Kabel Ult Bt, there is no need to make another font.
Joe.
Thanks Jo. That sure saves a lot of time.
Hello Joe,
you’re right, MS Word offers this feature. But for example Power Point or Adobe Photoshop does not. So I’ll try create my “own” font.
Many thanks, Thomas.
Hello All,
I am also currently validating the font creator software. My goal is to easily create an Outlined font for any existing windows fonts. The issue is the same as mentioned above. I have a software that does not give me the Outline option for TTF fonts but I require all fonts in this software to be outlined fonts.
So far I’ve been able to open the exisitng Arial TTF font but I do not know how to save this font as a new outlined font file. The validation software does not allow me to save fonts. So my questions are:
Is this easily acheived in the font creator software using exisitng fonts?
Is it possible for me to validate an outlined TTF sample before I purchase the font creator software?
Thanks for any replies!
It is best to use a font like Vera, which is released under an open license agreement. Arial is protected by copyrights, which would restrict what you can do with it.
I attach an Outline version of Verajja, which was based on Bitstream Vera. It took only a minute to do, but if you look closely you will see that some glyphs need some work.
You will require the Professional edition to do this, as it uses the Transformation Wizard.
