I’m probably very ignorant (not having worked through all the tutorials 
) but after I use the magnify and demagnify pointers, what’s the simplest way of returning to the standard arrow pointer?

Click on the Selection button will return into the default selection mode. Versions after 4.2.4 (not available yet) will also return to the default mode after pressing the ESC key.
