preview window shows different glyph spacing than testfont

OK firstly, this is a wonderful tool.
On FCP5.5 evaluation, I have created a viable working (non handwriting) font relatively easily first go. Again …a remarkable program.

given the nature of some of the letters, some pairs needed kerning (for example “pa”) to bring the two closer, even after autometrics/ position/advance width/ and bearings are tweaked. I need for the letters to overlap/intersect/invade one-anothers space.

Now in FCP preview I can see this kerning effect, and am happy with the placements, but in FCP test current font window the spacing has not closed up.
(it is returning to a default? position, or failing to read latest accurate kerning tweak).
1. can this be explained, am I missing something obvious?

Running the font in Word 2003 on XP Pro, initially I experienced the same kerning failure. I read the support forums until my eyes were bleeding and found that Word has a kerning-enabling box to tick, and the problem is solved in Word at least. Photoshop6 however reads it as without kerning, and thus my second query
2. can any of the spacing tweaks, aside from kerning, apply to just a single pairing thus in “pa” the “p” will play nicely with all other letters, but still adopt a “unique” position when followed by an “a” (& visa versa)?
again if I have missed an obviousness I apologise.

meanwhile Iawait your aid …quietly weeping here in my confusion

The Test Font dialog uses a standard Window text control, that doesn’t support kerning.

You might be able to accomplish this with OpenType layout features, but very few applications support those OpenType layout features. Since there are more applications that support kerning, you will be better of with kerning for now.

Thank you Erwin
re testfont window read settings; I understand now, but must ask, did I miss that info somewhere? I ask purely incase if I hadn’t missed it, it maybe well worth a significant mention somewhere.
eg. From my own experience, not knowing what was causing no discernable kerning in testfont, had me thinking I’d erred, and I tried everything many many many times before finally asking the question. (I’m not necessarily smart, but I’m persistent) Anyhow bloke again thanks

As I mentioned, I have read very many forum topics here, and would just like to comment on the generous spirit I have found throughout.

Yourself and one or two others make these forums an impressive resource and a very pleasant one.
So I’m just saying well done fellow earthlings

Hi gerard,

Thanks for your positive feedback!

The lack of kerning support is mentioned in the help file and user manual, see the online Kerning - Overview. I might add an equal notice to the Test your Fonts topic.
