Hi I have followed the tutorial and have a problem when I get to test font (f5) when I select this it comes up with the error message - Font is not valid, make sure all required microsoft naming fields are available. I have tried using autonaming and then selecting test font but everytime it comes up with the same message. Please can someone help this novice.
Even with a blank new font I’m not able to get this error. If you run the autonaming wizard it should enter the required field, and it does not allow you to not enter a name for the font.
You can send the font to me to look at if you want.
Hi, I have found the sorce of the problem.
It seems that I can only have 750 fonts installed at any one time. Once I had removed some of the fonts (I will never use) it now wants to work. I only discovered this while trying to install some other fonts I had dowloaded that would install but were “not available” according to Microsoft ME. I dont know if this is only applicable to Microsoft ME, it might be, there are many weird querks with ME.
Many Thanks for replying and trying to help and hopefuly if anyone else has this problem you can point them in the right direction.
You can install a maximum of approximately 1000 TrueType fonts in Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium. The exact number of TrueType fonts you can install varies, and depends on the length of the TrueType font names and file names.
All font files are registered under a single key in the registry, and a registry key cannot exceed 64 KB in Windows 95, 98 and ME. If font names average 20 characters in length and font file names average 10 characters in length, the maximum number of TrueType fonts you can install falls between 1000 and 1500.
Note: When you use a utility that renames font file names to their internal font names, you will most likely exceed the limit when you install more than 500 fonts.
If a TrueType font file is located in a folder other than the Fonts or the System folder, the full path to the font is included in the registry, using up more space in the key and reducing the number of fonts you can install.
Another limitation is related to Microsoft Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI). The GDI contains an internal list of fonts, with 10 KB reserved for font file names. If font file names average 10 characters in length, the maximum number of TrueType fonts you can install is approximately 1000.
Note: There is no limit to the number of fonts you can install in Windows NT, 2000, XP and Vista.
