Saving Problems

OK so im working on editing a font file for a game and I can’t save it correctly. In the window it shows all of the glyphs but when i save it shows a blank font file in the preview. I’m confused an very new to this stuff. Could it be because I have the trial edition? What can I do to get it to save?

Hi Toot

Welcome to the forum, sorry you are having problems. I need some more information:

a. Did the font file work before you edited it? Was it a font from Windows/Fonts directory?

b. Are you saving it to the Windows/Fonts directory? You have to be wary of doing things directly to the Fonts directory as fonts should be “installed”, not simply copied. Have you “installed” the font – FC does this very well for you (Font==>Install) and leads your though the steps.

c. What are you doing when you say “editing a font file” Are you adding new characters or just changing shapes? Is it a Symbol font?

d. Sometimes (rarely) you might reboot your computer which regenerates a whole buncha stuff. My preference is to let FC install it. I don’t “ever” need to reboot while working with fonts.

e. Also since you are playing with the font, make sure you have backups of the original so in case you have to go back you can. This also applies to saving the font – save it to another directory (than Windows/Fonts) where it won’t mess up your normal operation.

Generally you must be aware of where the font came from and where you are saving it to. Windows Font handling is not all that friendly or flexible AND it uses the Registry so you don’t want to increase your odds of failure!

Generally copy it away, play, save and install it back. I am a One Note Charlie…

Give me some more information and let’s see.
