If a font is not installed, but is selected in MainType, I get an error message when trying the save the font in FontCreator.
I wonder if MainType really needs to protect fonts that it is previewing?
It is a design decision. I’m aware it isn’t always useful, but it ensures a font is previewed with the actual data.
