Support for UFO and AFDKO Features

Even though FontCreator already supports both our own OpenType layout feature script and the one used by VOLT, we have decided to also add support for the more commonly used AFDKO OpenType layout feature script language (FEA). This allows FontCreator to support the Unified Font Object (UFO) format. Right now we’ve implemented importing UFO along with features.fea.

We would like to know if people rely on UFO in their font production workflow. This will help us decide if it is wise to also implement export to UFO or focus on other improvements.

To test this new functionality, we would love to receive some UFO projects, so let us know if you have or know some.

So far we’ve used these UFO based fonts:

Harmattan
Inria Sans and Inria Serif
Manjari Malayalam Typeface
Source Sans Pro

Let us know if you have more examples, so we can see if FontCreator can open them. We will soon release an update of FontCreator, so you can import UFO based fonts.

Right now you can drag and drop a ufo based font onto FontCreator, e.g. the file metainfo.plist. It will also import OpenType layout features if the package also contains a features.fea file.

We have just released FontCreator 13.0.0.2636.

It supports loading Unified Font Object fonts, preserving OpenType layout features as available in the features.fea file.

We now support both our own format and the fea syntax to edit OpenType layout feature code.

And since FontCreator also allows you to import Microsoft Visual OpenType Layout Tool (MS VOLT) feature code, you can choose which syntax you want to use.

Let us know your results.

Hi
it is a great update, that will give more options to designers if they wish to use FontCreator format or the FAE syntax to edit OpenType layout feature code.
Thank you Mr. Erwin

The latest release, build 2655, released today 10/6/2020 supports the export of Unified Font Objects.
