Symbol font question

I would like to know what the difference is between a symbol font and an ansi font. If you are making symbols, should you always choose “symbol” as the font type? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both and why should one be chosen over another?

I tried to link to the symbol font tutorial you suggested, but cannot get to the page. Thanks!

Symbol fonts map to the normal keys on your keyboard, but to a range in the private use area of Unicode. One of the main differences between a symbol and a “normal” Unicode font is that a Unicode font will preserve word boundaries when setting line breaks. A symbol font will put the line break after the last character that will fit on a line.
