Hi All,
I am using 5.5 Font creator professional Edition.
I am trying to create a Tamil Uniocde font.
In Tamil, by combining Consonants and Vowels we will get a new character. For example:
TAMIL SYLLABLE KAA; 0B95 0BBE
TAMIL SYLLABLE KI; 0B95 0BBF
TAMIL SYLLABLE KII; 0B95 0BC0
TAMIL SYLLABLE KU; 0B95 0BC1
TAMIL SYLLABLE KUU; 0B95 0BC2
TAMIL SYLLABLE KE; 0B95 0BC6
TAMIL SYLLABLE KEE; 0B95 0BC7
TAMIL SYLLABLE KAI; 0B95 0BC8
TAMIL SYLLABLE KO; 0B95 0BCA
TAMIL SYLLABLE KOO; 0B95 0BCB
TAMIL SYLLABLE KAU; 0B95 0BCC
the combination of two unicode characters produce a new character.
How can I achieve this using Font creator?
Regards,
Srikrishnan
You should first install the latest version. Your version is outdated. Next take a close look at OpenType layout features. Just search this forum and you’ll discover several posts that might help.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I have the latest version (5.6) only. I wrongly typed as 5.5.
Actually in English for example, if we need, “aacute” means we have unicode value for all the three “a” “acute” and “aacute”. So we have defined all the three characters in their appropriate fields using Font Creator.
But in the case of Tamil, for example, if I need “TAMIL SYLLABLE TTU” means, I have unicode value for “Tamil Letter Tta (0B94)” and “Tamil Vowel Sign U (0BC1)” but there is no unicode value for “TTU”. (But in the Arial Unicode MS font glyph for “TTU” has defined in the unassigned field). For a new font creation how can I add this? Is it possible to give me a Tutorial file for the above mentioned example, in order to understand it clearly.
FYR: Tamil encoding methods defined in the following Unicode.org webpages:

Thanks for your help in Advance,

Srikrishnan
Hi,
Thanks for your guidance.
I think creating Tamil font is not as easy as English.
Ok, I will try to learn this, if possible.
Can you confirm me onething. is it not possible to create Tamil Fonts with Font Creator?
Is it possible to save as any existing Tamil font and change the complete glyphs in that font? is it legal or illegal?

Srikrishnan
I do not know the answers to your questions.
However, I do know that there is a man who has produced a font which supports Tamil. He is Mr James Kass. The font is called Code2000.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code2000
http://www.code2000.net/
The Unicode Private Use Area of the Code2000 font has glyphs for ligatures for various scripts. I seem to remember that one of those scripts is Tamil. Mr Kass often uses the technique of both using glyphs for ligatures in OpenType tables and also mapping them into the Unicode Private Use Area so that the glyphs can be accessed from non-OpenType-aware applications. This can be useful for such purposes as making prints and producing text within the artwork of graphics.
There is a section for Tamil on the following web page.

I hope that this helps.

There is a section about Tamil in the following chapter of The Unicode Standard.
http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode5.0.0/ch09.pdf
Section 9.6 Tamil starts some way down page 32 of the pdf document.
That chapter and other chapters are available from the following web page.
