Test Font Questions

Hi, I’m new around here.

a. Could someone remind me where the text for Test Font resides. I thought it was in a file called FCPPreview but the one I find is not the one used by the program. Is it in the “install” directory? Got forbid it’s in the registry…

b. What’s the “setup” for including non-standard characters in Test Font. I have been using \20AC for instance for euro, but that not’s working anymore (shows as \20AC).

c. Is there a maximum size for the text? I added this nice line and it doesn’t show: “Victor jagt zwölf Boxkämpfer quer über den Sylter Deich”.

Thanks.

a. Due to restrictions in Windows Vista, we had to move several adjustable files to another place. You should be able to locate them here:
C:\Documents and Settings<User Name>\Application Data\FontCreator

b. Why not use MainType to add characters?

c. I don’t know. Maybe this works:
Yxskaftbud, ge vår wczonmö iqhjälp.

b. What’s the “setup” for including non-standard characters in Test Font. I have been using \20AC for instance for euro, but that not’s working anymore (shows as \20AC).

I use the following method for individual characters, here customized for your example.

  1. Start Microsoft Calculator and use View Scientific. Select the Hex option button. I click the CE button and the C button, though that is probably not necesary at start up, but I tend to do it every time. Enter 20AC either by keying or by clicking the buttons as you choose. Select the Dec option button. The number 8364 is displayed. This is the decimal equivalent of the hexadecimal 20AC.

  2. Start Microsoft WordPad. Hold down the Alt Key. Key 8364 using the number keys on the right of the keyboard, not those above the letters. Release the Alt key. A glyph should be displayed on the screen, it may be the glyph of the character you desire in the font which is being used in WordPad or it may be the .notdef glyph of the font which is being used in WordPad, it does not really matter which it is as the information about the character code is present even if a glyph for the character is not being displayed. Highlight the character and use Edit Copy.

  3. Start FontCreator. Use Font Test… and move to wherever you would like the character to be placed and then hold down the CTRL key and press V and then release the CTRL key.

You can also choose to disable Unicode support (Tools → Options → General). Then you can edit previewtext.dat the old way.

Hurray that worked – found the file. Added the greek phrase. Changed the \20AC to \20AC and everything’s fine.

Thanks for the insights. Dick
