TTF saved as OpenType Layout?

Hello,
I am a new user of FontCreator and have a question.
I received a TrueType font file (ttf) from a customer to edit.
When I double-check on the ttf (outside of FontCreator) to open the file, I see the following in a preview window:

Font name: xxxxxxx
Version: xxxxx
TrueType Outlines <-------Note this line

When I open this file with FontCreator and simply export the ttf back to my disk drive without making any changes (just exporting the file as a “ttf” but saved under a different name), I get a different result when I double-check on the new file:

Font name: xxxxx
Version: xxxxxx
OpenType Layout, Digitially Signed, TrueType Outlines

What causes the file to change from “TrueType Outlines” to “OpenType Layout, Digitially Signed, TrueType Outlines”?
Does this event matter?

The same change happens when I edit the ttf and save it under a new ttf name.
At the same time, on my Windows XP system, the icon for the original icon is displayed as a “TT” (TrueType font file) while the icon for 2nd file is displayed as an “O” (Open type)

Thank you in advance.

No, it doesn’t matter. The font was enhanced with a digital signature and some default OpenType features. See this earlier thread, which explains a bit more, especially about the Digital Signature.

Open the exported font in FontCreator, and take a look at Font, OpenType Layout Features. You may find that some basic features have been added to your font, depending on whether or not it contains certain glyphs such as ff, fi, or fl ligatures.

I tested with a free font called Yolanda2.ttf and found that Yolanda2.otf contained a fraction feature. If an application like Word 2010 or Serif PagePlus is used with this OpenType font, and the fractions feature is enabled, then typing 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 will perform an automatic Glyph Substitution to replace them with ¼, ½ and ¾ respectively.
