vector-graphics/paths

i am used to work with vector-files and would like to import them into the fontcreator programm.
can anyone help me???

Yeah, Erwin is working on import features from various vector formats as I type this. Right now, I think the best you can do is save your vector as a bmp then use the FCP import feature as it currently exists. It will require some work, but I don’t know how far off he is from getting the new import done either.

that s nice…

but the problem is that i can save my files only as adobe illustrator (ai,eps)

formats.

But you still have a “print screen” key on your keyboard. I know that’s really bad, but that’s the only way I can think of doing it. Realize that I don’t work with vector graphics except in FCP, so there may be some work-arounds that others have found. Try searching the forums for them, but I think your best option is to view your vector graphic, print the screen, then paste into paint and save it as a bitmap so you can import into fcp. Sorry I don’t have something better for you.

thank you for trying to help me…

i just started working with the fcp but i think the vectors would be more precise if i would create them in illustrator.

what do you think of other programms??

This may not help a whole lot but you should know that in Illustrator, you can go to FILE/EXPORT and save your .ai file as bitmap or many other options. Still, there is a lot of adjusting to do, once you import back into Font Creator.

I have found that I can copy vectors in CorelDraw and past them into the appropriate glyph edit window in FCP 4.5. My procedure is to scan my art, which generally consists of pencil outlines on a grid pad, using the 256 gray shades output at 100dpi. Usually, my individual characters (Caps) are drawn or rendered at about 2 to 2 1/2 inches in height, so I get several on one scan. I import the resulting .jpg into CorelDraw where I do a hand trace using the bezier drawing tool. When I have the vector looking like I want, I fill it black. It does not matter if the vector has been assigned an outline. Just so there are no open points and the fill is black. Right click, copy. Open the object glyph edit window in FCP and right click, paste. FCP gets busy generating contours. When my character has become a new glyph, I size it to where I want it and find that I have a fairly easy job of fine tuning the contours. set the bearings, done.
I have no idea if this works from Illustrator or any other vector program but it sure works with Corel. I’m using V8. I’ll be interested in any comments on this technique.

Why do you need the extra stage? Why not just open the scan in a bitmap editor, copy just the glyph you wish to trace, and paste it into Font Creator? My First Font

Good question, Bhikkhu. Certainly a fair one. I guess I feel more comfortable working in Corel, by habit. I like doing the hand traces there, and so far it has been my experience that I get a better result than when I let Font Creator do it for me. I am a novice at this, and I probably will change my routine. I certainly respect your opinion and will continue trying different ways of doing things. At any rate, my point really was that of suggesting a way to put vectors into Font Creator, rather than creating them there.
Thanks, I will keep learning.
