Yes, it is a real problem — do we need Cyrillic and Greek in our fonts? Vietnamese is the most demanding.
I recently added the Turkish Lira to my fonts, and completed the Currency Symbols character set with Tenge and a few others for good measure.
If you want to be more scientific about it, rather than just adding whole character sets, the Letter Database is a useful resource.
