vertical positioning way off

Just spent all day searching the forums and reading the manuals. But since I know absolutely nothing about fonts and metrics I wasnt able to understand any solution to my problem. Hoping someone can help.

We are creating an online Flash application. The application has a box for users to enter text and the ability to select the font. For most fonts, the text lines up nicely in the box. However for Scriptina, the text is way below the box.

I looked at the font in InDesign as well as the preview pane in FontCreator and it also looks off (attachment shows the vertical discrepancy between Times vs Scriptina).

The only thing that seems to move the text higher is to reduce the WinAscent significantly down (it only looks right when its close to 0). But that cuts off the text.

Is there any way to keep the font from getting cut off while shifting the entire line up so that it would appear in the same horizontal plane as other fonts?

Sorry for sounding so clueless (and probably using all the wrong terminology), but Im stumped. Thx in advance.

Your Scriptina example looks right to me. That’s the kind of beautiful font it is. If it doesn’t fit your application you have to choose another.

I found a copy to download from About.com

Latin small letter thorn is the cause of the spacing problem. Edit that glyph, or delete it, and recalculate metrics from Tools, Settings, Metrics, Maximum, Calculate, and the WinAscent will be reduced significantly.

Thank you for the response. I still dont understand why, but it worked! Guess I still have tons to learn about fonts.
