Better use of multiple cores CPUs

Post by Jey » Thu May 27, 2010 5:05 pm

Hello !

I just wanted to point out that FontCreator is using only one of my two cores, so when it has heavy calculations to do (import image) my cpu is stuck at 50% of use. It means that it would be twice as fast if the two cores were used.
I don't usually have problems with the speed of the software, but when I try to import highly detailed images, I sometime have to wait 30-45 seconds per character.

Now I think about it, I'm still using the 5.6 version, but I'm almost sure I tried v6 in hope this would be solved and it wasn't.

Thanks a lot :)

If you can save your characters in a vector format such as AI or PDF, you will find that they import in no time at all and produce glyphs with fewer nodes. Vector import is new in FontCreator 6.1.

FontCreator does not have support for multiple cores because things like that need to be designed in the development process very early. Back in the days when FontCreator was developed multiple cores/cpu's we're very expensive and not considered to be for the mainstream user. Offcourse the computer systems today look very different and the OS-es have changed also. The new thread scheduler in Windows 7 for example, now has the ability to let applications run on multiple cores even if they were not designed that way so it's possible that FontCreator can use up 100% of CPU time on Windows 7.

I didn't know about the thread scheduler, I'm running windows 7 so I'll make some researches about that. Seems really interesting, not only for Font Creator but for any software.

Thanks a lot :)
