I don't know enough to make a real request (save one), so I'll second those for manual hinting, automatic hinting, and embedded bitmaps.

The "save one" is this: support for mouse-button "undo"; it's a great time-saver, especially for catching a little mistake right away and moving on...

Undo is the right-click menu. Control Z, Control Y are Undo and Redo.

That's such a close list, I'd just have to say - all of them. Open Type and auto-hinting look particularly good. But, really, all of them.

It would be nice to have a 'smooth' function that sets a selected portion of a glyph to a fixed normal width all around.

It would be very nice if
1.FCP could support OpenType features because ,by using these features, font creators would have a very good control on their fonts behavior in modern applications. Nowadays the OpenType concept is an accepted one among many software developers.
2.FCP could have the power of working on Type 1 fonts. Up to now, as I know, there are two main and basic formats for making a font: ttf and otf. Although some may have better performance by using one of them, both these formats work well in many operating systems. ttf fonts are based on truetype (second ordered) curvatures and otf fonts are based on type 1 (third ordered) curvatures. So, if FCP doesn't have the capability of Type 1 fonts manipulation, it would be deprived of making one major font format (i.e otf fonts) and this would be a very big disadvantage of the program.
3.FCP could support open contours. This capability is very good if one wants to have small portion(s) of a glyph repeated in other glyphs.

Feature requestS

1. Pick up the Captions of the Unicode points created inside VOLT.

2. Copy the left and right margins too when copying one entire glyph to a second blank position.

3. Have an indicator that shows the next open code point available in the Private Space. I had to calculate it every time I needed to add a new set of glyphs

4. Allow specifying ranges of code points to add to the Private Space (now you have to keep clicking one position at a time to accumulate in the list)

4. Allow copying of a batch of ligatures from one contiguous area to another (blank) area. (This will reduce Indic font making from months to few days).

Hi JC,

Which version of Font Creator are you using? I am not sure if I understand your requests correctly, but I think the first three can be done with the Professional Edition using Insert Characters or Paste Special.

1. Use Paste Special, and check the box to copy mappings.

2. This is the default behaviour when copying glyphs in the overview.

3. The empty spaces available can be seen in the Insert character dialogue. In the dialogue below, the green squares indicate glyphs that exist in the open font. The white squares indicate the glyphs that exist in the template font, but not in the open font. The grey squares indicate glyphs that don't exist in either font. The numbers in the bottom field are the range of glyphs to insert that I have selected by clicking and shift clicking on the grey squares.

4. Double-click to insert the first code-point, hold down shift and double-click the second code-point at the end of the range, or just type what you need in the bottom field of the Insert Characters dialogue, e.g. "57440-57503" to add those 64 characters in one go.

4. Copying glyphs to another range of mapped glyphs can be done easily from the glyph overview, whether they are contiguous or not (just use control click, control shift click to select individual glyphs or ranges into which to paste the clipboard contents).

Added feature to Auto Kern

I am evaluating Font Creator, and noticed a feature that would be really nice to have. I have two versions of a font that I am working on. They are really the exact same font, but one is OpenType, the other TrueType. I am trying to import the kerning information from the TrueType font into the OpenType font. However, I noticed that Font Creator always wants to redo the actual kerning values rather than doing an exact import. It certainly would be nice to just import kerning values as-is. I think I will purchase anyway (Font Creator seems to be a fabulous tool) but this feature would make it that much better.

Microsoft VOLT does an excellent job with OpenType. If you do decide to support OpenType I hope you don't do it like FontLab. What a waste of programming effort! It's not compatible with VOLT and it's very limited at what it can do so it's basically useless in my opinion.

Support for Type 1 fonts would be nice. I recently had someone send me Type 1 font to edit and I had to ask him to save as a TTF first. Besides the embarrassment it lost all the hinting.

VIEW/TOOLBARS/PREVIEW (request)

VIEW/TOOLBARS/PREVIEW I make designs instead of fonts, and I would like to be able to see the preview window (always on top) with features:
1. Grid - Adjust/set parameters in inches. mm, etc., color, line thickness.
2. Save - Save, Save As,
3. Print - Print Options
4. Invert - B&W / W&B

Also would like to EXPORT as .AI and make, if possible, compatible to .PSD as well as Rhino3d .3dm, ...

LINE THICKNESS, POINT SIZE OPTIONS: Being able to set the thickness of the lines in the editing window would be nice, as well as the point SIZE. I have a huge screen, the lines are like silk and points like needlepoint.

TAB/ARROW to move 5 spaces.

Better ROTATE tool, and a simpler ARROW button (system) to get back to the default arrow.

DOWNLOAD UPDATE PAGE; A page with downloads listed by VERSION. "5.6 vs 8.0" so one can be positive they have the latest version.

Thx,
Ced

The Windows edit control used for the Font Test window doesn't support kerning, so I believe that to implement this would mean a lot of work, as it would mean writing a custom control.

The Preview Toolbar (Shortcut F8) does support kerning, so use that instead if you want to see the affect of kerning on some sample text. You can cut and paste some sample text into the Preview Toolbar and expand the toolbar to take up the whole screen.

Showing the Preview toolbar is also much faster as it does not need a temporary font to be installed.

I don't like using microsoft VOLT. they should have a more easy to use opentype editor and feature adder (with all the same capabilities) and fontcreator should have the ability to aslo save in .otf

Erwin,

I made a smartfont using your program. I beleive it is world's first orthographic font. It has over 400 ligatures making a complex script. It can be viewed inside Firefox 3.0. See www.LovataSinhala.com and then this page: http://www.lovatasinhala.com/dualscript.htm.

Thank you for your great program that made it possible.

As you know, technology is fast progressing. Opera, Firefox (and even IE 8.0 with a plug-in) is able to show svg graphics. SVG fonts are the next generation web fonts:
http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/fonts.html

It would be great if we could extract vector outline definitions from the regular OpenType fonts to make the web fonts.

Thank you again.

JC

unicode 5.2 support would be great. I'll buy the software immediately, as soon as the support arrives.
