House Bricks and House Bricks Outline fonts

Post by William »

I have just uploaded two new fonts to the web. They are House Bricks and House Bricks Outline.

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~ngo/fonts.htm

They are at the bottom of the page at the time of writing.

The House Bricks font was produced using the Font Creator 5.0 program. The House Bricks Outline font was produced from the House Bricks font using the Glyph Transformer facility of the Font Creator 5.0 program.

The House Bricks and House Bricks Outline fonts are intended as display fonts for large sizes, such as 72 point.

Thank you for your interest in these fonts.

Actually, there is a background story to these fonts which hopefully you will find of interest.

Towards the end of January 2005 the United Kingdom government announced within a speech in Parliament that there would be an initiative on building high quality affordable houses, which initiative is now called the Design for Manufacture competition. As part of this, there is the aim of stimulating public discussion about what homes for the 21st Century should be like.

There is a link from that page to the Design for Manufacture competition. At present it is as follows, though maybe the destination of the link changes as updates are made, so referring back to the main page may perhaps be advisable.

I had some ideas, one of which is now introduced on the following web page.

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~ngo/housing.htm

In the period before writing and publishing that text, when I was thinking about how to proceed, I felt that the competition should inspire artistic expression and it emerged as these two fonts.

I have been trying out expressing various thoughts using information technology tools. For example, using the ImpactPlus program from http://www.serif.co.uk which, I have found, can be made even more effective in three-dimensional overview designing by producing parts for house walls containing holes for windows as glyphs in fonts and then using such a character as a text character in the 3D workshop of ImpactPlus. That produces three-dimensional slabs with the shape of the glyph which is in the font. Those can then be scaled, moved and rotated so as to produce three-dimensional models of house designs in overview. I say in overview because ImpactPlus, although precise, does not have the range of numerical sizings needed for precision computer-aided design: however, I hasten to add that ImpactPlus is not intended to do that, it is more for adding impact to graphics for web pages, I am pushing it to its limits with my application of it as a simulation tool and very well it performs!

ImpactPlus is promoted as a graphic design item, yet I find it wonderfully precise for the simulations which I like to try. For example, the rotations are performed internally using quaternions, which is a stylish mathematical technique.

I have also been having a look at the house designs linked from the http://www.imsisoft.com webspace.

http://www.houseplans.com/

I like to have a look through the various house plans, specifying various combinations and learning how those have been achieved. I found a search for houses with a courtyard interesting.

Whether my ideas get through remains to be observed, but maybe!
