Mike Hebrew v1.04

Post by Mike Thompson »

This purely Unicode version of Mike Hebrew will now work with MS Word.

To download see: http://www.mikethompsonpaintings.com/font

Many thanks to Erwin who found the bug that prevented the full family from being usable on Windows. It was to do with settings. See [Format]->[Settings], select [General] tab and look at 'Classification'. The settings there can't be just random they really do matter.

The character set is the same as those in the Hebrew fonts from Guttman that come with MS Office. There are no latin alphabetic characters.
The Character Range settings are used to tell applications that latin is NOT there despite the fact that punctuation and numbers come from the latin pages.

These fonts will also work on web pages providing the encoding is set correctly.

Please let me know if you find anything amiss.
Enjoy!

Hello Mike Thompson

Congratulations on getting your needs met!

I'm very surprised that the solution involved the Panose settings. I did not believe that Panose did anything except when there was a full font substitution in which case the OS would try to find a "nearest match" to your font. It clearly is something more.

I had heard of issues with Format/Settings/Ranges being correct, but not Panose.

Can you describe in more detail what you had to fix and can you point to any background documentation on this problem/solution.

Thank you,

Dick Pape

Mike is talking about the Classification values on the Header tab, Panose located on the Classification tab (this is confusing indeed) isn't required.

These are all required Font Family settings:

On the Format menu, click Settings, and then click the General tab.
  • Classification - Weight
Make sure your Regular and Italic fonts have the same Weight. For example:
    Normal (Regular)
Make sure your Bold and Bold Italic fonts have the same Weight. For example:
    Bold

    Classification - Width
Make sure all fonts in the same font family have the same Width.
Make sure these settings are correct for all four fonts:
  • Mac Style and Font Design fields - on the Format menu, click Settings and then click the Metrics tab.

All font subfamily name fields in the Naming window. This can be done through the AutoNaming feature.

For the Italic and Bold Italic fonts
  • Set Italic Angle to a negative value (e.g. -16.33) - on the Format menu, click Settings and then click on the Post tab.
Set Caret Slope values through Calculate Rise and Run - on the Format menu, click Settings and then click on the General tab.
