MainType 4.5 on new PC using Windows7

Post by irenefrie »

I have a new PC laptop with Windows7. There are 261 fonts in the C:/Windows>Fonts folder, however when I load MainType 4.5 and browse to just C:Windows>Fonts if get 480 active fonts. I do have other font folders on my PC but shouldn't I just get the 261 fonts under the C:Windows/Fonts folder.

I want to just have the 261 fonts as my active fonts and then 'load' other fonts when needed. Should I remove my 'other' font folders and reload MainType 4.5 again to see if I just get the 261 fonts that came with Windows7?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Check the View menu in the Windows Fonts Explorer, you're probably hiding bold, italic, etc.

I did a search and I don't appear to have Windows Fonts Explorer. I went online and it looks like I can download it. However, why would I need it when I have MainType? It says Windows Fonts Explorer lets you manage, test and install fonts.

I checked properties on my C:Windows>Fonts folder and there are 641 files (261 showing, 480 installing on MainType) and I don't know about the rest or how to check them out.

Thanks.

You don't need to download anything. The Windows Explorer view of your fonts folder has the View menu that I am talking about.

The 681 fonts probably includes some bitmap fonts not shown or managed by MainType.

261 showing suggests that you're not showing bolt, italic, and bold italic variants in the Windows fonts folder.

Thank you for your screenshot, that always helps. I'm still at a loss; I have included a screenshot showing my fonts folder. All the fonts are "SHOW" none are "HIDE".

Adobe Caslon Pro — Bold, Italic, Bold italic, Regular, Semibold.

That's five fonts, listed as one in your version of Windows. Note that it says 261 items not 261 fonts. The list has 261 items, Adobe Caslon Pro is 1 item, but five fonts.
