Difficulty loading Postscript fonts

Post by Rob Searle »

Despite me telling the programme where the PFM and PFB files are, it will not load the majority of my Type One fonts. The only ones that are working were activated by another programme which I evaluated after I realised ATM is a waste of time in Windows 8 (it tells you fonts are activated when they are not, and Adobe has admitted ATM is defunct). MainType claims it cannot find the PFB files and so cannot activate them. I paid a lot of money over the years for my Postscript typefaces and need them to work for various clients' projects. How can I get them working, in the same way as those which MainType obviously picked up from a previous software installation?

I don't have any Postscript Type One fonts to test, but I am sure Erwin will need to know which version of MainType you're using.

Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is no longer compatible with Windows. Adobe even warns to not install ATM 4.0 or earlier on Windows 2000 or XP. So don't even try to do it on windows 7 or 8!

And yes, it would help if you let us know what version of MainType you have.

I'm using MainType 5.1, Standard Edition, which I assume is the latest version, having downloaded it in the past fortnight.

Can you show us the exact error message you get when you try to install the fonts through MainType? A screenshot would be fine.

I don't get an error message as such - the fonts in question don't appear in any dialogue box which allows you to load them. They do appear as Invalid Font Resources, with the messages can't find PFB file.

Have done a screen shot but am not sure how to include it.

Are the matching PFB and PFM located in the same folder? That is how it is supposed to work.

Use the Upload attachment tab below the message box. Chose it on your hard drive, then add the file.

The PFM and PFB files are in separate folders, as required by ATM, and these folders are notified to MainType.

This is what I get when I press the Insert Image button:

They should be in the same folder, but there is one exception. It is also accepted if the PFB is one folder up.

Thanks - will transfer the PFBs and PFMs for the fonts I need into a new folder, notify that to MainType, and see what happens.

It's worked! Created a new folder called Postscript fonts and moved all the PFB and PFM files into, and MainType picked up all the fonts in it immediately. Who needs ATM? And MainType has many more features than ATM in any case. Thanks very much for your help.
