Can your Main Type font managers -- and their hundreds of fonts -- be loaded onto a secondary hard drive rather than the usual C drive, which I am trying to keep clear of big storage items?

Sure no problem as long as it is a permanent drive.

External drives are probably not supported as Windows won't connect them immediately.
