Today I revised a font that I created in FontCreator.
First, in MainType, I search for my font by name, and there were two entries for my font.
So I uninstalled the one that was installed.
Then I deleted both of them from MainType.
Then I revised the font in FontCreator and exported it to a new location (you can't export to the same location because windows locks any font that *was* installed).
Then in MainType I refresh the font library, and the new version shows up there.
So I go to install the new one, and MainType says:
Processing Font Information: failed...
Similar loaded
I even closed out of InDesign.
Oh really??!! How is that?
So now I'm stuck and can't use my font!
Can't install font because it is loaded

Usually a reboot solves issues related to Windows font locking.

Re: Can't install font because it is loaded
The problem here isn't that the font is locked. It's that MainType can't install the font because it thinks the font is "loaded". And the font does not exist in MainType anymore.
edit:
Ah, actually I do see it now in "Active Fonts" with a red sphere next to it.
It has no information in any of the panels,
and MainType says, "Unknown Font Selected".
It's stuck.

Did the reboot help?

Re: Can't install font because it is loaded
Probably.
Before I rebooted I deleted my Windows font cache just in case.
But now my font is installed.
I am rather put out about all this.
If I update a font on my computer, I can't then use it without rebooting the machine.
It is the same thing every time.

Do try the font install feature in FontCreator 9 Beta. Don't uninstall the previous version.

Re: Can't install font because it is loaded
When I use the I+ button in FontCreator 9, it provides me with a wizard.
Wizard says,
1.Remove the previous version through Windows Fonts folder
2. Close all applications...
3. Restart Windows, or
4. Change the font name
But I use MainType, so I should not even consider the Windows fonts folder.
Also, I am using the font with latex - so I need the actual font file to copy into latex's font directory.
My font is called Priory.
It is already installed in MainType.
The FontCreator install font wizard creates a second font in c:\windows\fonts called Priory_0.ttf
Now I've got two versions of the same font installed.
I don't think FontCreator and MainType work well together.

Maybe latex keeps the previous font loaded, and prevents you from installing the new version.
But there are many other reasons
