Symbol font style

Post by Pyanepsion »

For Symbol font, MainType indicates a "Normal" style and FontCreator a "Regular" style. Why this difference?

In MainType 11, all of my Symbol fonts indicate a regular style.

Here is what it looks like in Maintype 11 with the free Microsoft fonts having the sequence ‘symbol’ in their name.

My version of MainType (MainType 11.0.0.1268 [May 21, 2021]) shows that Symbol font as Regular. I have only a couple of very old WordPerfect IconSymbols fonts that show up as Normal.

My Symbol font also shows up as Regular in FontCreator Font Properties Subfamily, but Custom naming for export shows Normal for several languages, so maybe it depends on the version of Windows that you have installed?

I wonder if I have the right version of FontCreator.

Yes, you have the correct version of FontCreator.

You need to go to the Instances tab and then click the button at the right of the Style Name. Then you can see and edit the localized style names.

A non-variable font has one instance, while a variable font usually has numerous instances.

Phew! Thanks Bhikkhu and Erwin. I thought I would have to uninstall and reinstall Font Creator.
