Clarendon

Post by PJMiller »

Does anyone know of a good 'Clarendon' style typeface which is free and has an italic version?

I have looked but all the free ones I have found are either not terribly good or don't have an italic or both. Some which I found seemed to think that an oblique version is italic, it isn't !

Of course there could be one out there which isn't called Clarendon but if there is my search wouldn't find it.

Because I couldn't find one that ticked all the boxes I have started to design my own.

I am not familiar with Clarendon. Verajja Serif is a slab serif font face.

I already have Verajja Serif and very nice it is too but it doesn't quite match the style I was wanting for the project I have in mind.

I am well on the way to making my own as you might have seen in some of the screen shots I have been posting, this has been my 'beta test' project.

It's name is 'Munson'.

Many 'Clarendon' type fonts seem to be without an italic version. I don't know if this style of font isn't supposed to have italics.

Ray Larabie made Superclarendon several years ago.

It isn't free.

It's italic is just an oblique.

Ok I know I'm posting super late, buuuuuut...

Designcuts.com have insane font bundles at like 99% off. They have bundles of different types (graphics, templates, fonts, etc.) and it changed every month or so. Right now (2019-10-07, and for the next week), they offer almost all their previous bundles at the same time.

ALL THAT TO SAY: you could get the actual Clarendon, and a bunch of other great fonts, for $29 (USD). This is a steal at that price.

The bundle with Clarendon is here.
The page with the rest of the bundles is here.

(I'm not paid to share this, even though I wish I were!)

I made a font which I called 'Munson' which fulfilled the role of a victorian style slab serif quite well.

Thank you for your recommendation but Munson is available for free.

You might try to look for the typeface Modern Roman or Modern No. 20.

It might be a matter of the name Clarendon being a trademark or something like that.

Though I seem to remember that Clarendon was like Modern Roman Bold, as Modern Roman was used as a typeface for books.

They both have the upper hook on, for example, lowercase a and uppercase R.

I used to handset metal type that was Monotype Modern Roman. There was also an italic.

I'm not looking for a Clarendon lookalike anymore!

'Munson' is already finished and has been available since July 2017. I even added Cyrillic to it. It is available for free.

I'm not looking to buy another Victorian slab serif font. I'm giving one away.
