Character fit within merged cells in Excel

Post by Fonts »

I am working on this font and have noticed that some of the end characters do not within the merged cells in Excel.
In the case I have attached, part of some characters are truncated on the right boundary (the green line is the border of merged cells in Excel).
Sometimes I have issue where the characters over-run the border rather than continuing in the next line. I have also noticed this latter problem with some fonts I have installed from font manufacturers.

Note: The caption is from a printed PDF, not a screenshot in Excel.

How can i fix it?

This looks like a problem in Excel rather than in the fonts. Try setting the cell padding or margins to a few more pixels. I don't use Excel, so I cannot tell you how to do that.

No I don't believe it is an issue in Excel.
It is the font as I have tested hundreds of different types of fonts and the issue seems to be with the less established fonts, rather than with, say, fonts shipped with Microsoft products.

I'm not able to reproduce the issue with Excel 1802 (from Office 365).

What font are you using?
If it's your own font, is it based on a template from and established font?

I went through all my installed fonts.

If you also use the same Excel version, then send me a sample Excel document along with the font.

Erwin
I presume all your installed fonts are those provided by Microsoft.
In which case this is what I'm trying to say in the original post, the issue is not there not there with the established fonts.
With my own font, started from a blank template, I am having issues. And I also note the same issue with some downloaded fonts from sites such as dafont and others. Possibly because of designer inexperience, the characters are either truncated or they over-run the border.

To illustrate the issue.
Compare Courier New with PT Mono. Courier New is an established Microsoft font. PT Mono has the same issue as my font.

- Excel workbook.
- PDF printouts.

Erwin
As stated in the original post, the issue is in the printed PDF. You know that Excel will give variable graphic output.
Look, I know that it is a difficult and unique issue, and you may not be able to solve it. If you can't solve upon considering above, please refer me to any literature or another forum that would deal with this.
Please don't take it as criticism, I really have to solve this.

To me it was not obvious it was a PDF issue.

If the fonts do look fine in Excel, then I suspect your PDF generator/driver is the cause of the problem.

Topic moved since it is not related to the use of FontCreator.

I find that CutePDF is one of the best free PDF printers. Which were you using?

I was using PDFill.
I did try CutePDF but there was no improvement.
I printed to xps and this was better but I haven't found any suitable PDF printer.
