Right hand side bearing changes

Post by Mike Thompson » Thu Dec 15, 2011 12:13 am

I frequently find that right hand side bearings have moved to the right
(without my permission!).
This seems due to the use of composites. I have a lot of them
used to add diacritic marks to Hebrew letters. Usually I don't notice
until later that the bearing has moved so I'm not sure what caused it
but I might be any of the following:
I carried out a SMALL transformation to slightly change the weight of some glyphs.
I modified by hand editing a widely used diacritic.

The right side bearing jumps a lot to the right usually more than 100 units.
Moving them all back is very tedious as I need to look the values up in a list.

I know what you're talking about, as I can remember it happening before, but I can't seem to reproduce it in FCP 6.5. What version are you using, and have you tried downloading the latest version?

I'm back on this topic again. Causing me trouble again!
I have to move a Hebrew diacritic called a Dagesh which is used in many composites.
Doing this can change the side bearings in the composites. The left hand may be changed
as well as the right.
Is there any way of turning off this behavior.
I'm using V6.5 Build 270

In each composite glyph properties, select "Use this glyph's metrics" for the base glyph. Then the diacritic can be moved without affecting the composite glyph's metrics. However, any changes to the base glyph will.

Thanks Bhikkhu, Sounds good.
I have done an experiment with HEBREW POINT DAGESH OR MAPIQ
which is used in 27 composites. I first set "Use this glyph's metrics" for the base glyph
in all these characters.
Next I moved the glyph in the dagesh character - an arbitrary amount of about
400 units to the left - so any effects could easily be seen. In all the composites
the dagesh moves about 400 to the left. So far so good.

In all cases, the dotted line for the right bearing becomes doubled. The little arrows at
the top of the bearing lines are still there but new arrows appear at the bottom of the
bearing lines also. The bearing lines with arrows at the top are those of the base glyph
and have not moved. The new right bearing line with an arrow at the bottom is always
to the left of the original line but can be very close or as far as 100 units from it.

In most cases the base glyph moves to the right. The glyph does not do this if the dagesh
remained with the bounding box of the base glyph.
When the dagesh ends up say 300 units outside the left side of the bounding box then
the base characters moves about 300 units to the right!

When the base glyph moves I have to move it back by hand and if it moves
only a little I may not notice and just leave the error there.

Not good. Hum. Can we do better?

For me, the base glyph's arrows are at the bottom, and the base glyph does not move.

Anyway, the composite glyph's metrics are unchanged because they use the metrics of the base glyph.
