Previous hinting preserved

I wonder what happens when a font is autohinted. Will autohinting effect all glyphs or only those those glyphs which have no hints? In other words: will existing hints be preserved or replaced by autonhints?

All other hinting is replaced, as it ensures the aimed height for sub sets of characters remain the same.

This is rather disappointing, because automatic hints inevitably are inferior to hand made hints in quality fonts. Would it be possible to add the option to preserve existing hints, or, as an alternative, to select the glyphs which should receive aitomatic hints?
