Appearance of modified font not the same as the original

Post by Fonts »

I am using FontCreator 6.0.
When I modify an existing Windows font, the appearance is not as clear as the original, when viewed on the computer screen (when printed to PDF there is no difference).
I've tried smoothing and rendering without success.
What I am I doing wrong?

It is most probably due to loss of hinting. Are you removing hinting data on opening fonts? I don't have FontCreator 6 installed, but I suspect that it was similar to FC6.5. If you can afford to upgrade, later versions have automatic hinting.

On modifying a glyph's outline the original hinting will be lost. As Bhikkhu Pesala pointed out, more recent versions of FontCreator can auto hint your font on export. Considering all other improvements we made over the years, we highly recommend to upgrade to the latest version.

This did not work for me.
I don't have the option of buying your software again.
Any other suggestions?

If you download ttfautohint it has a standalone option for hinting fonts. It's not as convenient as applying hints on export directly from FontCreator, but it's doesn't require any great technical skill like other free solutions.

Not working. I get the error message:
"This font is not a valid font in SFNT format with TrueType outlines. In particular, CFF outlines are not supported."
The font I am using is Source Code Pro.

You don't have to buy a full new license; you can upgrade for $39 and it is well worth it. We obviously don't know your financial situation; for some people it is a similar to 3 pizzas, and for others it is a week salary.

The auto hinter can only hint fonts with TrueType based outlines, so that won't work unless you convert the font from CFF to TrueType based.
