developing ligatures

I have several fractions I have added to my font as well as the four or five normal ones. But I need to learn how to access them and if they need a tables look up how to do that. Do you know where I can find the information. I only understand the drawing side of a font at present. Although I have used some of the global tranformations like bold and thin and hollow.
