Difference between font installation and export

Hi:
When I finish my font I usually install it from fontcreator 12 and it works fine, but when I exported the font to the desktop and copy it to the font folder in the windows it does not replace it, it is just adding it.
Both ways have the same name and with .otf extension!
What are the differences? And which one should I send to other computers?
