setting different glyphs for key combinations

Post by Dan Kreider »

I think this is what a ligature is?

I'd like to display one glyph if "r" is entered... an entirely different glyph if "rr" is entered... and a third, different glyph if "rrr" is entered.

I've been through the documentation but can't figure out how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OpenType layout features can be confusing and overwhelming at first, but I hope my answers will help.

First of all, do read the tutorial Enrich Your Fonts with OpenType Features, as it gives some basic and advanced overall information. It also explains how to benefit from automatically generated features.

Alternatively if you want to manually add such ligature and you have no OpenType layout features, then you have to add it as follows:

Open the OpenType Designer dialog.

Click the + toolbar button to add Latin script with default language.

Now select the default language in the left tree view, and again click the + button, but now you can add a feature. Add:

Standard Ligatures (liga)

Now select the Ligature feature, and click + again to add a Ligature substitution.

Now click the other + toolbar button located right below "1 subtable".

Select a first input and the output glyph and press the OK button. Now you can further add to the input.

You should be able to view the results in the Preview area.

Let us know your results.
