Since the 18th century Russia hasn't had a currency sign, but that will change soon as Russia has announced a new national currency symbol.

If you are not familiar with Cyrillic, then you may wonder why they did come up with a glyph that looks like a P instead of an R?
Although in English Russian Ruble starts with an Latin R, in the Russian language it is Русский рубль.

You can already start designing the new symbol, but as far as we know there is no Unicode code point defined. Maybe the Unicode consortium will place it at code point $20BB. As soon as we know more, we'll let you know!

Last week the Unicode consortium announced the new Ruble sign will be assigned to codepoint $20BD.

See this and other upcoming changes to the Unicode standard here:

It seems $20BB has already been taken by the Nordic mark sign, and $20BC is meant for the Manat sign.

Thanks for the update. I just published my Kabala font update with the Russian Ruble assigned to code-point $20BB, so I had better change it a.s.a.p.
