The secret to making smooth curves is to remove all unnecessary points.
  1. Work in points mode and use the W,Q shortcuts to navigate to the next / previous node
  2. Hold down Shift+W or Shift+Q to select several nodes to delete with the delete key
  3. Use the background image (F9) to check that you don't change the shape too much
  4. Use shortcuts Ctrl or Shift + Cursor to move nodes by 1 unit or 100 units instead of 10 units
  5. When you have finished work on one contour, switch to contour mode and send it to the back using the Arrange Menu or Toolbar
