Composite versus simple glyphs

If I copy a composite glyph character and paste it into another location to modify, this causes it to become a single glyph font.

This difference leaves different right-click menu options for working with the character. I have tried it several times and it seems to be consistent.

Why doesn't it paste exactly what was copied?

I have also noticed that within a character - CTRL-C, CTRL-V does not copy and paste an accent for example - even though cut and paste appear on the menu - but CTRL D does duplicate the accent. Seems like an odd handling of this function.
