Gorton font

Post by Terry Eldridge »

There is a font used by engravers called Gorton, but I could not find the equivalent TrueType font. Can someone tell me how difficult it is to create such a font given all I have is the font in an image?

I actually have a better image than what is in that particular document, but it is still an image.

Thanks!

I downloaded a copy of the pdf and then searched for the word Gorton.

The word is on page 2 and page 3. It appears to be a reference to a commercially available engraving font.

I searched on the web and found the following with various pictures: a larger version is displayed when an image on the page is clicked.

An Opinion

If you plan on designing it from scratch you probably have enough image to work from. The font is very simple and straightforward design.

If you plan to scan it, the cross hatch design is a difficult background to eliminate.

It might be easier to look for similar fonts such as Engravers Gothic BT (Bitstream) or Gotham Medium (Hoefler) (these two are close) and look on Identifont (http://www.identifont.com/) or DAFont (http://www.dafont.com/), etc., for free equivalents.

These might be used directly or modified in Font Creator as needed.

Thanks very much for your comments! I'll look into similar fonts as you suggest, and possibly modify them if necessary.
