Re: Align Toolbar
They alter the z-order of the contours.
I have used them occasionally when editing nodes with the keyboard. The z-order will determine which contour is selected with shortcut keys. Contour 0 will be selected first with the W (Next Contour/Node) shortcut.
Say that you're editing the letter B, which has three contours: 0, 1, 2. If you want to edit the inner contours 1 or 2, promote each to contour 0 when you wish to edit it by bringing it to the front. Then the shortcut W will select the one that you want to edit. In contour mode you can move the contours, in points node you can delete or move nodes. Each time you delete a node, the contour is deselected, so press W again.
