Batch Rename fonts in Folder

Post by Steadyhands »

A Batch Rename function would be very useful. Renaming one at a time is tedious.

I would like this built-in to MainType too, but there is plenty of freeware that will do the job very well.

Try Font Renamer.

The file names are not that relevant within MainType.

Do you also manage your fonts with a file manager, or is there another reason for renaming the files?

I often open fonts in FontCreator from Windows Explorer or the File Open dialogue, or copy them to another folder etc., so it helps to see a non-cryptic filename in Explorer, or in other programs like TrueType Viewer that I sometimes use.

In that case why don't you display the Title column in Windows file explorer?

If you correct the file names when you receive new fonts you never have to think about it again and you will quickly see whether you have duplicates or not.

It doesn't show anything for TTF in Windows XP Home.

Of course, you have to consider whether this small benefit is worth the time required to program it. I doubt if it is, since there is plenty of freeware around that can do this. It would be much better to spend the time programming something that can fix font defects or something else that would enhance MainType.

I think this has been implemented already.
  • Select the fonts that you want to rename
  • Export them from the File menu.

Bhikkhu, thank you for the swift reply.

Yes, I saw that the fonts can be exported, renamed as the font name from metadata. It would be nice to have more control over the result (appends; concatenation of metadata; etc.) to make this a full renaming feature.

Bhikkhu, you mentioned that there are several freeware tools that you use to achieve the results you want.

Could you list a few of those?
