Kerning

Post by John Davis »

When I do a trial of my font, I don't see the kerning that I have applied manually. Is this what I should expect - will the kerning be there when I install the font?

Thanks

The Test Font window doesn't support kerning. To test kerning pairs, you can use the Preview toolbar. You can also install the font and use an application that supports kerning.

Another easy way to test kerning pairs is to open the Test Font window. As long as this window is open, you'll be able to select the font (named fcp test font xxxxx) in any application that supports TrueType fonts.

Not all applications support kerning. If they don't support kerning they simply ignore the kerning pairs. Many sophisticated word processors and most DTP applications have kerning support.

In MS Word select Font from the Format menu and select the Character Spacing tab. There you can turn on kerning in MS Word by checking the kerning for fonts field.

Testing Combining Diacritics

Post by Bhikkhu Pesala »

:) Thanks for that tip. Also very useful to test the position of combining diacritical marks. I tested my font in WordPad as you suggested and quickly saw which characters needed some adjustment.

 Since one has to close the Font Test window to edit the font again, I did screen grab and kept the resulting clip visible in Irfan View while making the necessary adjustments.
