They will work, just copy and paste this line of text:



You can also use the Insert Symbol feature within Word to add characters.

Personally I don't recommend using the private use area, as such "characters" are not equal for all fonts.

If characters have no code-points defined by the Unicode Consortium, what else can one do besides using the Private Use Area? One can leave them unmapped, but then the only way to type them would be by using OpenType features.

It might be practical to add Standard Ligatures for M~ m~ Q~ and q~ to substitute M tilde and Q tilde, but how should one define Q dot above?

I am curious to know why voyager needs these glyphs; which language uses them?

The same could also be achieved by using a character followed by a combining diacritic mark, if the anchors had been set up correctly.

'Tilde' and 'dot above' are standard diacritics.

Here is a test font.

I set up the accented glyphs as Standard Ligatures. To avoid possible conflicts with abbreviations, I set Q dot above to use two periods. Type:
  • Q.. to insert Qdotaccent
  • q.. to insert qdotaccent
  • Q~ to insert Qtilde
  • q~to insert qtilde
  • M~ to insert Mtilde
  • m~ to insert mtilde.
Test in FontCreator's font test window, Notepad, Wordpad, or Word.

Open my font to see how it is done. The new glyphs are at the end of the font.

The new glyphs have no code-points, so they won't show up in any character map. However, they are easy to insert using Standard Ligatures, just like ligature ffi is easily inserted by typing f f i these new glyphs are inserted by typing m~ etc.

This method avoids the problems associated with mapping them to the Private Use Area. If you later change the font to one that does not support mtilde, the original text string of m~ will be seen.

I don't have Word 2016 to test, but I am sure that it will support Standard Ligatures. If you want to do it the hard way by using Character Map then the answer was already give above by Erwin.

Hi,
I found the solution. And this is very important reminder I think.
If we add a new character to a font and then we install it over previous version We cannot see the new characters. I don't know why.
But if we delete the previous version then install it, we can see the new characters.
