How can I make a perpendicular cut?

Post by Bernie Cossentino »

Hi,

I'm working with FC13 and I'm trying to make a perpendicular cut with my glyph. I've tried the shift Alt keys but they don't seem to reveal a perpendicular result. For that matter, can one elongate a line (like that shown in the gif) so that it retains its angle? Is any of this possible?

FontCreator 13 allowed constraint of the cutting angle in 15° increments.

In FontCreator 14, hold down the Shift key to constrain the cutting angle to 90° or 180°
This seems like a regression.

The measure tool now allows the user to constrain the angle in 90° steps. In FontCreator 13 there are no modifier keys to constrain the angle.

For other angles: drag a guideline, hold down shift to rotate it to an angle. Double-click to edit the guideline, and set the angle to a precise number of degrees.

Thanks for your reply, Bhikkhu,

I was hoping all this would be easier to do (given I'm not on FC14 anyway). I guess I'll have to use my best visual judgment.

If the contour that you want to cut is not at 45° or a multiple or 15° you can use another method.
  1. Select two nodes on the contour's long edge.
  2. Press "G" shortcut to add a guideline.
  3. Double-click the guideline to edit its angle
  4. Add or subtract 90 from the angle.
  5. Drag the Guideline into place
  6. Cut along the guideline.

Thanks again, Bhikkhu,

In the end, it was easier for me to make a cut from my line, set it 90deg upright, make my modifications, set it back to the angle I need and paste it onto the original line (followed by union contours...).
