Function or Glyph Transformer Script to make .alt from selected glyphs

I recently worked on a font where each Latin letter had 4 alternates. I had to name all 104 glyphs manually, A.alt1 A.alt2 a.alt1 a.alt2

I am respectfully requesting a function or glyph transformer script where for any selected glyphs, a new glyph is created with the name "&.alt1". And we would get to choose how many alts are made for the selected glyphs, and then it autonumbers them .alt1 .alt2 .alt3 based on the quantity we've selected.
