TypeCon2006

Post by William »

The following link is now about TypeCon2006.

http://www.typecon.com/

It is to be held in Boston.

Has anyone reading this ever entered into the TypeCon unjuried exhibition? If so, could you say something of your experiences of it please? I am interested in the possibility of entering next year. This would be something of an exercise as I would need to get the prints made at a printshop, then mounted, either by a printshop-style service if that is possible or by doing it myself after finding out where I can buy the mounting materials and then safely packaged and mailed to the USA!

However, it seems that it is an exercise worth striving to achieve as the exhibition is unjuried, which, if I understand the term correctly, means that if someone sends in an exhibit then it will get displayed as part of the exhibition. There is an entry fee, which was 15 US Dollars for one item in 2005.

Here are the 2005 submission rules as in a pop-up screen at the webpage.

The TypeGallery will be exhibited during TypeCon2005, and many works will travel internationally after the conference. All typefaces shown at TypeCon2005 will also become part of a permanent online exhibition here on the TypeGallery site. Some works may also be selected for print publication by SOTA.

You may submit either a traditional type specimen or a typographic design piece displaying your font in use.
Artwork may be in color or black and white.
Maximum artwork size is 11"x17".
Each submission must be mounted flush on an 11"x17" piece of white foamcore board. You must provide two (2) mounted copies of each submission.
Digital files must be provided for each submission. Supply 300 dpi press-ready PDFs or editable vector EPS files (Illustrator CS1 or Freehand v10 or lower). Files must be Mac-compatible and scalable. Convert all fonts to paths in the illustration program, and embed all fonts in PDF files. Proof your digital files carefully to ensure the highest quality appearance both onscreen and in print.

There is a fee of $15 per submission to help cover costs. Fees are waived for SOTA members, TypeCon2005 attendees, speakers, and sponsors.

end quote

Regarding "an 11"x17" piece of white foamcore board" does anyone happen to know please if that is something readily available in the United Kingdom, perhaps in some art shops, or does it only get supplied in huge pieces?

The web page at http://www.typecon.com/ now includes the mention that the 2006 event is "in partnership with The Museum of Printing" with a link which leads to the following web page.

The http://www.typecon.com/ webspace now has lots of content, much of it in pages linked from the main page.

At the extreme right of the main page is the following link, though the page does not at the time of writing this note have any rules for the 2006 unjuried showcase of new typefaces.

http://www.typecon.com/typecon2006_gallery.htm

The workshops page makes great reading.

The following page seems as if it may soon have interesting content.
