Line overlap possible?

My font has some glyphs that protrude pretty far above and below the normal ascender and descender metrics. If I leave the metrics at typical values, these glyphs are cut off in a word processor.
But if I set the ascender and descender values to the maximum required by the contours, the spacing in the word processor is very far apart (and the cursor is disproportionately tall).
Is there a way to keep the metrics for line spacing “normal,” but allow extenders to overlap with the lines of text above and below?
