Looking to create Single line font with variations in SVG Format

Post by shtoopr »

Hello,
It's come to my knowledge that this program has everything that I've been looking for in order to create a single line font based on handwriting that contains variations of different styles per glyph in SVG format and single line.
However, I'm very new to this space and don't really know what I'm doing. I already have a single line font with variations that I was just looking to build upon, but I don't quite know where to start.

This guide has been my bible so far:
https://themissy.com/2021/advanced-tips ... -line-font

Are there any guides/tutorials that anyone would recommend for this topic?
Thank you

That is a great starting point!

We have an online tutorial about color fonts here:
Create OpenType Color Fonts

We strongly recommend to make a COLR font and then export as SVG. This way you will get best results, especially with single line fonts.

Here is a very basic sample project that shows what can be accomplished. It only comes with digits zero and one.

Font Project - SingleDeluxe.fcp

And an online single line color font demo page:

Note 1: The font contains the SVG color format, as SVG does support open contours, thus single line fonts. Not all operating systems, web browsers, and applications support this format. Firefox and Safari support this format right now. Initially Edge also supported it, but I think Microsoft dropped support for OpenType SVG and only supports OpenType COLR. If they SVG color format is not supported you will see a monochrome version with closed contours.

Let us know your results.

Thank you Erwin! This all certainly looks helpful. I'm mostly looking to use it with Axidraw Merge and Hershey text in Inkscape.
I'll keep you updated with my results :D

Note 2: The current release of FontCreator has an issue with exporting contours with quadratic curves. This update solves that problem:
FontCreator 14.0.0.2861 (64-bit)

Erwin,
I'm currently working on a Single line, open contour font. When I export it, the program automatically adds a line from the first point to the last point which closes the contour. I've attached what it looks like before exporting, after exporting, and my export settings.
Do you have any idea why it does this?
I shall wait patiently for your response,
Thank you. :)
Daniel

In the export settings set Open Contours to either Single stroke or Double stroke.

Let us know which one works best for you.

Single stroke connects my first and last points.
Double stroke works but it tells my plotter to plot vectors twice.
Do u think there could be any other setting I'm overlooking?
Many thanks,
Danny

As already explained by The Missy in the link from your initial post, what you see with Single stroke is expected with most software, but most CNC machines do give you your desired result.
