Add new Character problem (version 7.5)

Hello there,

I want to add a new character to a font (a “ț” but the Insert Character doesn’t really seem to work, or I’m doing something wrong. Here is what I’ve been doing so far:

  1. I open the Font I want to modify.
  2. Insert Char
  3. Go to Unicode Block - Latin Extended A - $0163 - LATIN SMALL LETTER T WITH A CEDILLA
  4. Double Click to add the new Character to the font.
  5. I go over to “t” glyph, copy it’s curves and paste them into the newly inserted character. I then copy a comma or an apostrophe in the place of the cedilla and save it.
  6. In the Properties - Mappings I have Macintosh Roman, Microsoft Unicode BMP Only, Microsoft Unicode full repertoire, Unicode 1.0 Semantics. I then map the corresponding value and Character name ($0163) to all the platforms.
  7. Save.
  8. When I try to preview the font and enter “ț” it shows me a question mark. I installed the font and tried it in MS Word but it doesn’t work.

Now, I searched the Help Section and the forum for similar issues, and I kept running into the Private Use Area and the Supplementary Private Use Area, but I don’t know how to use them. When I select the Private Use Area/Supplementary Private Use Area I get nothing but blank cells. Is it supposed to look like this? I tried selecting a blank cell and then proceeded to steps 5 and 8, but it still doesn’t work.

I tried this in an older version (5.5) on my boss’s laptop, and also in the newest 7.5 trial version with the same results.

Could someone point out what I’m doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

BOOKMAN LIGHT ITALICv4.ttf (93.4 KB)

Have you registered the program?

See the FAQ at the top of this support forum.

Oh, my. I have a previously registered older version and it doesn’t work, regardless of what I do. I thought the newer version would work, but given that it doesn’t support the character I don’t know what to do anymore.

If it had been registered, would it have worked? I mean, had I performed the same steps on the newer and registered version, would it have worked?

Thank you.

Of course it works in the registered version, whether the latest or the oldest, but the Trial version doesn’t support more than a basic character set. T cedilla will never show up if you use that.

If you use the registered version on your boss’s laptop, update the code pages and ranges on the Format dialogue, then it should work OK.

The lowercase “t” is not mapped, which is not going to help, but that should not stop the t cedilla from working. It did stop Complete Composites from working, which had me puzzled for a while.

  1. I added back the lowercase t using Insert Characters
  2. I copied the mappings and postscript name to the t glyph using paste special, override same mappings
  3. In Format, Settings, header, I set the Contents and Layout version to 3,
  4. I set the font revision to 1
  5. On the ranges tab, I recalculated the Character ranges and code pages

I don’t know what else is broken, but that should fix it.
